Arundhati Bhattacharya, CEO of Salesforce India, Raises Concerns about Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence: A Host of Issues

Arundhati Bhattacharya, the CEO of Salesforce India, has expressed her concerns regarding the advancement in artificial intelligence (AI), stating that it brings with itself a host of issues that need to be addressed. She emphasizes that the technology cannot be overlooked due to its immense use cases, but stresses the importance of addressing critical issues.

Ethical and Economic Concerns

“When it comes to AI, there is an issue of bias, there is an issue of trust, the issue of liability, the issue of privacy, and they all need to be addressed. And many people are working on coming up with the solutions for this,” Bhattacharya said. She believes that these reservations are significant factors that need to be considered, with ethical concerns regarding AI being just one aspect. Bhattacharya also highlighted economic factors that are limiting widespread adoption across enterprises.

“Not just that, it’s also a question of price. Believe me, at this point, the amount of compute capability it takes up is huge. The question is will we be able to do this all at a price that is affordable,” she added.

Assistive Roles of AI

Bhattacharya views the current use cases of AI as being majorly in assistive roles, where the technology is helping workers maximize efficiency and speed in completing tasks. She emphasized that AI is currently being used as an assistant, for example, to write basic reports and code. However, she stressed the importance of human supervision on the work done by AI, indicating that it is not being allowed to run amuck.

Potential of AI

Despite her reservations, Bhattacharya believes in the potential of AI’s capabilities of solving real-world use cases. She contrasted AI with blockchain technology, stating that in the case of AI, especially generative AI, there are real-world problems it can solve. Additionally, she mentioned the democratizing impact of generative AI in data intake.

Use Cases for Indian Markets

Bhattacharya also spoke of potential use cases for the Indian markets, particularly in the BFSI sector. She noted that integration of generative AI will help in bringing personalization to customer relationship management, indicating the value of AI in specific industry applications.
